About Emotional Support Cat Training Course

Can you really train a cat? Can you eliminate problem cat behaviors? You sure can! Cats can even learn tricks like giving a high five.

Similar to dogs, cats can be trained with simple cat training commands. People assume cats are hard to train, but positive training methods like rewarding good behavior produce results. Our three-stage program covers a wide range of topics. You’ll learn how to read cat body language like a professional and how to apply your understanding of cat behavior to train them. You will also study behavior management and more!

Our online Certified Cat Training Course was developed by the SDTSI team of trusted, experienced behavioral experts, who have 30+ years of combined professional animal care, dog, and cat training experience. It will help you to get to know your cat, train him to meet your individual needs, and lead your life with confidence, productivity, freedom, and self-reliance.

This course is spread over 3 distinct modules, covering everything you need to learn about having an Emotional Support Cat: basic training, cat behavior management, and treatment, etc.

Who should study this course?

Individuals who suffering from mental health issues including Anxiety, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Autism, Bipolar/Manic Disorders, Cognitive Disorders, Depression, Phobias, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and stress, or who are planning to adopt or pick out a cat and train them to become an emotional support animal in the near future.

We generally recommend getting an ESA letter from a licensed mental health practitioner (LMHP) before you start the training. If you have one of the above conditions or something similar, speak to a mental health professional such as a psychiatrist, psychologist, or licensed clinical social worker. You can ask them for a letter to certify that you have an emotional or mental condition and require an assistance animal to alleviate some symptoms.

FAQs about Emotional Support Cat (ESA Cat)

1. Why do you need to train your emotional support cats?

Under federal laws, emotional support cats do not require specific training, but they need to be obedient and well-behaved in all places.

🐾 Communicate clearly with your cat using clicker training and cues

🐾 Build confidence in shy cats

🐾 Interpret your cat’s body language

🐾 Teach your cat to do fun and useful tricks

🐾 Make going into a pet carrier a fun, stress-free experience for your cat

🐾 Reduce problem behaviors like jumping up on and scratching the furniture

🐾 So much more!

Even though your support cat doesn’t need to be trained by a specific set of guidelines like service dogs are, it is wise to teach your cat some basic good manners. You will want to enjoy the privileges of being able to take your ESA with you wherever you go. Both you and your furry friend are going to have a much easier time of it if your cat is well-behaved.

2. Where can you go with your emotional support cats?

* Emotional support animals are protected under the Fair Housing Act from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This means emotional support cats can live with their owners, regardless of a landlord’s or building manager’s pet policies.

* Although ESAs are protected by HUD, as of December 2020, they are no longer allowed on airplanes

* Some Hotels: as there is no law protecting an ESA’s right to public access, hotels are not required to allow emotional support animals. However, it may be worth asking the hotel before you book if they will accommodate your support animal. Otherwise, it may be best to find a pet-friendly hotel to stay at.

* Some Public Places:  such as restaurants and stores, have no obligation to allow your ESA to enter. This usually includes workplaces, as well.

However, it doesn’t hurt to ask, and some places may choose to accommodate your emotional support animal. And when it comes to your place of work, it’s all up to your employer.

3. Can a landlord refuse an emotional support cat?

No. Your landlord must make reasonable accommodations for your emotional support cat to live with you. They also cannot impose any pet fees or age or breed restrictions.

The only way that a landlord can legally refuse an ESA is if that animal poses a threat to others or if the request for accommodation is unreasonable in some way. Whether you’ve got an emotional support animal or a service animal, your landlord must accept your letter as a statement from a medical professional of your medical need for your pet.

4. What conditions qualify for an emotional support cat?

- Social Anxiety Disorder

- Postpartum Depression

- Depression

- Phobias and Fears

- General Anxiety Disorder

- Panic Disorder

- Bipolar Disorder

- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

- Seasonal Affective Disorder

5. Can a Cat be a Service Animal?

Cats CANNOT be service animals. Cats can be emotional support animals.

According to the American Disability Act (ADA), “Service Animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities.” There is a special provision written in for miniature horses, but nothing that mentions specifically service cats.

What Does It Mean To Be Certified?

It means your cat has been trained to perform the work or tasks as an emotional support cat.

There is no requirement in registering an ESD under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Registration, though, helps in dealing with airlines and landlords. There is also a custom-animal handler ID card or certificate for this purpose. Even though not required, some building owners and their staff are trained to ask for this card or certificate.

Please note that:

ESAs legally must be prescribed by a licensed mental health professional like a therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist.

Since January 11, 2021, The U.S. DOT (U.S. Department of Transportation Air Transportation) changed the rules governing service animals on planes. Airlines would no longer be required to accept emotional support animals. So far, United, American, and Delta Join Alaska have already been banning Emotional Support Animals. Now, when traveling with an emotional support cat or a therapy cat, standard pet-related regulations and restrictions will apply. This means if you need to travel with your emotional support cat, you’ll need to make other accommodations for her, such as using a pet carrier.
